Abstract	Cataclysmic variable stars (CVs) are close, interacting binary systems comprised of a white dwarf and a companion star, which is typically a late-type dwarf star. Their progenitor systems are post common envelope binaries (PCEBs) with a white dwarf and a late-type companion, but no ongoing mass transfer. Our understanding of the population of CVs and their progenitors is hindered by the selection effects on the observed samples of these systems. This dissertation aims to assemble and examine a sample of nearby CVs that is not subject to some of the most common selection effects by using the SUPERBLINK proper motion survey and a color selection across UV, optical, and IR colors. I present the sample of known CVs recovered in SUPERBLINK, as well as the discovery of a new CV, PM I03338+3320. The orbital period, spectral energy distribution, optical spectroscopy, and optical photometry are given for this newly discovered object. I also present the discovery of 186 new detached white dwarf-M dwarf binaries (WD+dMs) along with fits to both of the stars in these systems. Spectroscopic distances have been determined using the fits to both the white dwarf and M dwarf. Lastly, I give careful examination to the eclipsing CV, SDSS J154453+2553. Its orbital period, ephemeris, and an estimate of its distance are given along with optical spectroscopy and photometry.
