Abstract	Flexible fiber scopes are widely used in industry and medicine. Typical scopes are made using conventional optical components and order-packed flexible image bundles. The optical performance of a flexible scope is largely determined by that of the image bundle, which has not been fully quantified. This thesis, through theoretical and experimental work, studies the image bundle. In particular, the contrast and resolution is examined by means of crosstalk and the modulation transfer function. The theoretical model, describing crosstalk between adjacent fibers in the image bundle, is developed by using the Gaussian approximation, the Weakly Guiding approximation and the Coupled Mode theory. This model describes the coupling effect in adjacent fibers in an image bundle, demonstrates the correlation between fiber properties and the image quality, and greatly simplifies the coupling computation. A unique measurement system has been developed to objectively quantify the image bundle quality. With this testing system, the crosstalk ratio and modulation transfer function of various image bundles are compared. Experimental results are consistent with theoretical analyses. Quantitative recommendations are given to optimize the image bundle quality. This research provides useful guidance for creating improved image bundles for flexible fiber scopes.
