Notes	Alexander Slidell Mackenzie's biography states that the Revenge left Charleston to pursue British and French privateers on 22 June 1810, a day before this letter was written. The Revenge did not return to Charleston until after a confrontation with a British-stolen ship in July 1810. The nature of the promise Hamilton mentions is not clear. However, it is possible Hamilton means that Perry cannot come north but must remain in the waters off of the South. It has been surmised by one biographer of Perry (David Curtis Skaggs) that Perry wished to be closer to home (Newport, Rhode Island).
