Abstract	Brain tissue mechanics are an important biomarker for neurological disorders, yet methods to obtain tissue information yield inconsistent conclusions. These techniques can be invasive or require excised tissue, where tissue function is altered from an in vivo state. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a noninvasive technique that uses tissue motions measured via magnetic resonance to recover mechanical property distributions through an inversion approach. A poropelastic model exists to better characterize fluid-saturated materials like brain tissue, which is nearly 75% fluid. This work develops and evaluates the poroelastic MRE model to address issues regarding independent material testing, material property assumptions, and insufficient tissue motion, as well as an application to neuropathology. A dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) method is a standard method used to verify new inversion models in MRE, yet relies on a viscoelastic material assumption. Viscoelasticity and poroelasticity involve differing model assumptions, which cause inaccuracies in property evaluations. A dynamic poroelastic model was developed for typical DMA experiments, including fluid and inertial forces that are not found in current analytical solutions. Consistent shear modulus and hydraulic conductivity estimations were made on porous material, with the latter being the first dynamic estimate of its kind. Hydraulic conductivity is the measure of how easily fluid penetrates tissue and has far-reaching neurological applications, but it is currently assumed in the model, creating model-data mismatch. Here, an updated inversion model was developed to estimate this property, with encouraging results in both simulation and porous material. Due to high wave attenuation in standard externally-actuated MRE experiments of brain tissue, an alternative technique was developed to utilize brain tissue's intrinsic pulsatile motion caused by blood pressure fluctuation.
