Abstract	Many organisms recognize and respond to categories: predator, prey, rival, or juvenile. Organisms recognize these ecologically-important categories by assessing diverse sensory stimuli. A primary focus of my research has been understanding how organisms use stimuli to recognize potential mates and to avoid similar but genetically-incompatible individuals of other species. My dissertation research used multiple approaches to determine how co-occurring species affects the evolution of male signals and female responses in Oecanthus tree crickets. Male tree crickets rub stridulatory organs on their wings to produce simple cells and females respond phonotactically by walking to male cells. To understand how community composition affects male signal evolution, I tested hypothesis about how the metabolic cost of signaling changes during diversification, finding that signals diversify across a constant energy gradient via morphological and acoustic trade-offs. I then investigated the factors shaping the evolution of female mating responses. When multiple co-occurring species produce signals using the same sensory modality, some will have intermediate signals while others have the most extreme value in the community (for example, the highest or lowest pulse rate). How do the response functions of the extreme species differ from those of the intermediate species? To address this question, I played synthetic calls to females to generate response functions for the fastest pulse rate species in the community in multiple sites. In each case, females of the fastest pulse rate species responded to pulse rates that were faster than the mean but not slower (Figure 1), while females of the intermediate species had the greatest response to pulse rates that matched the male mean. These results suggest that species with extreme signals may be more prone to hybridization and reproductive interference but may also have more standing variation with which to respond to interference and selection.
