Abstract	After decades of searching we have yet to find the progenitor systems for type Ia supernovae. In fact most of what we know about this homogeneous class of supernovae is from spectral features associated with the incinerated remains of the C+O white dwarf star. Even so, studies of freshly synthesized ejecta have not uniquely determined the explosion mechanism nor the various progenitor systems responsible for this avenue of stellar death. By contrast, I will explore what we can gain from studying early epoch signatures of unburned progenitor material (carbon). Meanwhile, astronomers recently bore witness to SN 2011fe, the closest observed normal type Ia supernova of the modern era. The prompt discovery and follow-up of this nearby event uniquely allowed for a more complete record of observed properties (e.g., signatures of unburned material) than all previous well-observed events. More specifically, the full range of rapid spectroscopic changes, in both wavelength and time, was documented with continual day-to-day follow-up into the objects post-maximum light phases and well beyond. In retrospect, documenting spectroscopic behaviors of type Ia supernovae has been more often limited by sparse and incomplete temporal sampling than by consequences of signal-to-noise ratios, telluric features, or small sample sizes. As a result, type Ia supernovae have been primarily studied insofar as parameters discretized by relative epochs and incomplete temporal snapshots near maximum light. I will also discuss a necessary next step toward consistently measuring spectroscopic observables of type Ia supernova spectra, which will be relevant until progenitors are observed or detailed models are refined.
