Abstract	The Internet has become a virtual place where people not only operate in isolation but also interact with other Internet users. Collaborative systems are becoming more popular. Applications now being introduced could provide better remote education programs, support virtual patent-research teams, and enable collaborative computing and data sharing. This thesis is composed of two parts. The first part of this thesis focuses on two related security issues. First, in order to prevent unofficial information propagation, forward secure signatures are applied to address short-lived certificates. This significantly reduces the cost of the traditional pair-wise key approach. Second, in order to mitigate the damage caused by key exposure, three signature schemes--HKIS, PmRSA and I2S--are proposed in different settings. The second part describes a research prototype, called Open Collaboration (OC). This system allows qualified new users to join a collaboration through trust negotiation and maintains secure collaborations over P2P networks. This combination has not been addressed before. The concept of multiparty agreed roles are also introduced. This new feature will expand the current trust negotiation and trust management to cover a wider array of research topics. In addition, this thesis implements a recommendation module to help the OC users find valuable resources.
