Abstract	Quantum wires and dots can be created by patterning inhomogeneous strain on semiconductor quantum wells. I have used laser spectroscopic methods to study the carrier transfer from the host quantum well to quantum wires and dots. For quantum dot systems, it is found that a long-lived intermediate state (IS) is involved the transfer process. We attribute it to a charge-separated state forming with the electrons outside the dot and the holes inside. The formation of this state is predicted by the band edge modification caused by strain effect. The theoretical and experimental comparison of both the spectral position of the IS and the number available intermediate state confirm this assignment. However, the IS is not observed in the quantum wire structures, because the strain fluctuation along the wire can lower the effective barrier height the conduction band and no charge-separated state can exist. The low dimensional structures at the GaAs/AlGaAs interface is also studied in this thesis. We found that the strain variation of the stressor in the sample growth direction could provide the carrier confinement of that dimension. With the lateral confinement, we can achieve quantum wires and dots at the heterojunction. The interface wires shows efficient excitation transfer from the GaAs bulk part.
