Abstract	Humans have a seemingly unique capacity to reflect upon information about the self to form evaluative attitudes that influence their quality of life and predict mental health outcomes. While psychologists have devoted decades of research to the study of self-evaluation, the brain systems that give rise to these processes remain largely unknown. This thesis aims to incorporate the study of self-evaluation with neuroscientific methodology to investigate how these phenomena are represented in the structure and function of the brain. Using multiple neuroimaging modalities and analytic approaches, the present research tests how self-evaluation is distributed among a network of brain regions that work in concert to integrate self-referential cognition with evaluative processing. Study 1 uses a combination of neuroimaging techniques to identify anatomical and functional connectivity patterns underlying individual differences in trait and state self-esteem. Study 2 uses a longitudinal design to demonstrate that the structural integrity of brain networks underlying self-esteem predicts changes in self-esteem over time. Study 3 investigates the influence of self-esteem on the function of these brain networks during affective social perception. Finally, Study 4 uses a multivariate crossdomain machine learning classification approach to test the hypothesis that neural representations of the self are fundamentally positive. Collectively, these studies reveal that self-evaluation is associated with the structure and function of frontostriatal networks linking brain regions supporting self-referential cognition with the reward system. Ultimately, this work contributes a neuroscientific perspective to the empirical study of self-evaluation. This approach informs the understanding of mechanisms underlying positive self-regard that promote resistance to multiple psychological disorders and enhance positive well-being.
