Abstract	The oculomotor system needs up-to-date information about eye position in order to make accurate saccades to stimuli in the environment. This thesis investigated how well the oculomotor system uses information about eye position to make a variety of perceptual and behavioral decisions. The first part of the thesis examined how well human subjects can control and monitor their own eye position under a variety of instructions. Results indicate that human subjects cannot control the generation of small fixational eye movements (microsaccades) when their task is to keep their eyes fixated on one location in space (either with or without a visual reference). Subjects also cannot subjectively report the occurrence of these movements. Interestingly, subjects are able to use eye position information to correct for the drifting of the eyes away from the intended point of fixation. The second part of this thesis evaluated how well subjects can monitor their eye position in the absence of any visual cues. Results show that subjects do not use information about eye position when making perceptual judgments about the relative spatial location of two successively presented lights. The dichotomy of results in the two parts of the thesis suggests that while the oculomotor system can use information about eye position on a behavioral level (to correct for drifting of the eyes), it cannot, or does not, use eye position information when making perceptual judgments. This conclusion is commensurate with the bulk of previous observations.
