Abstract	2-D and 3-D woven composites are becoming materials of choice for the forming of structural parts for an ever-increasing range of industries from infrastructure to aerospace. Research has shown that for a wide range of structural composites, in particular reinforced plastics, the matrix properties govern strength through yielding and fracture. This research has aimed to further understanding of micromechanical failure mechanisms in such laminates by carefully considering the effect of matrix properties on failure modes. Two carbon fiber 2-D woven composite laminates with different matrix, carbon and polyimide, have been studied to compare the effect of matrix properties on compressive failure. In addition, the polyimide properties were manipulated by performing experiments at elevated temperatures. Experiments were performed under fiber-aligned loading, and along in-plane directions 45° to the fibers bundles, which probed the shear strength of the fiber bundles. The room temperature failure modes of the two laminates were found to differ significantly, but yield and modulus reduction in the polyimide caused a transition in failure mode, making both strength and deformation mechanisms comparable. Failure under biaxial compression showed a reduction in strength with stress ratio, with failure identical to that under uniaxial compression, indicating a mode of interaction that enhanced the stresses leading to failure under uniaxial compression. Micromechanics models were developed that capture the trends in the experimental results, and suggest that the shear strength of the matrix governs failure mode, also under biaxial compression. The influence of interlaminar fracture on strength was also considered, and interlaminar fracture toughness was measured. A model is presented for fracture along the curved bundle-matrix interface which shows that this mode is probable in composites with low matrix toughness.
