Abstract	In the past, clinicians skilled at image-guided neurosurgery have relied solely on pre-operative scans for their navigational information. Often in the course of surgery, tissue is purposely retracted/resected or inadvertently moved resulting in a significant misregistration between the preoperative scans and the current state of the operating field. Solutions have come in the form of intraoperative magnetic resonance (MR) and computed tomographic (CT) imaging; but due to the costly and cumbersome nature of these modalities, it seems that a technique which could use the substantial quantity of preoperative information effectively, coupled with low-cost intraoperatively acquired data may be the most cost-effective solution. The approach proposed is a model-updated image-guided technique which uses the well established image-guided techniques with an augmented predictive model of brain deformation to inoperatively update the navigational fields. At the core of this approach is the development and quantification of a 3-dimensional model of brain deformation. This thesis presents a 3-dimensional finite element model for predicting brain deformation using consolidation physics and quantifies the model using an in vivo experimental protocol. The model incorporates effects of heterogeneity, anisotropy, interstitial fluid dynamics, gravity & drug effects and capillary transport and has been solved with high fidelity. Errors with known solutions or published computations are less than 3% for both displacement and pressure variables. Model simulations have correlated with in vivo data for both tissue deformation and interhemispheric interstitial pressure gradients. Numerical studies have estimated values for Young's modulus, Poisson''s ratio and hydraulic conductivity for white and gray matter. The computational model has been demonstrated to account for 70-80% of brain motion under loads comparable to clinical conditions. Finally, the updating of intraoperative images concurrent with surgery has been illustrated and indicates significant potential for model-updated image-guided neurosurgery.
