Abstract	Populations are, by definition, a collection of individuals, so the mechanisms of population change often occur at the level of the individual. The goal of this research was to examine how variability in the behavior of individual females influenced reproduction and therefore population dynamics in a migratory songbird, the black-throated blue warbler ( Dendroica caerulescens ). In this species, population fecundity increased with an increase in the proportion of females double brooding and with a decrease in nest predation rates, showing that double brooded species can offset losses due to nest predation at a population level by initiating additional nests. These results indicate that failing to account for the contribution of double brooding can seriously impair fecundity estimates. However, not all females that had the opportunity to double brood did so. In this population, double brooding occurred when high quality (older) females occupied high quality territories. By providing females with supplemental food, I found that supplementally fed females produced more second broods, spent less time foraging, and stayed closer to their nests than did control females. Food increased double brooding in both low and average food years, suggesting that this population was food limited in the production of second broods in most years.Finally, females that initiated breeding early had higher annual fecundity than females that initiated breeding later. Females that bred earlier probably had more young either because of seasonal changes in the environment or because they were experienced females who were also able to initiate more nests. An individual-based model showed that the contribution of late young had important population-level implications through its impact on population growth rate (lambda). Given the strong relationship between seasonal fecundity and population dynamics, both food availability and female quality can be considered important factors influencing double brooding and hence drivers of population dynamics.
