Abstract	Thousands of adolescents try their first cigarette each day, and many of these adolescents go on to become adult smokers who will die from smoking-related causes. This thesis examines the role of movie portrayals of smoking as a predictor of intentions to smoke and smoking behavior. Study 1 used structural equation modeling to assess the fit of a proposed model examining normative beliefs about smoking, positive expectations about smoking, and identification with smokers as mediators of the association between media exposure to smoking and intentions to smoke. The model provided a good fit for both the cross-sectional and longitudinal data. Study 2 found that smoking by stars that adolescents like is associated with smoking experience at the time of the star preference assessment, as well as with trying smoking over time. These associations are independent of other known predictors of smoking. Studies 3 and 4 examined explicit and implicit attitudes immediately after viewing smoking in film. There were nonsignificant trends such that those who viewed smoking in film had slightly more positive beliefs about smoking and perceptions of smokers, and participants who viewed positive portrayals of smoking compared to participants who viewed negative portrayals of smoking had more positive implicit attitudes about smoking. As a whole, these studies show that media exposure to smoking is a contributor to adolescent smoking. However, it may be that these effects obtain only after repeated exposure to media smoking.
