Abstract	Lowest order charged particle motion in the Earth''s magnetosphere can be explained using simple adiabatic theory. However, nonadiabatic theory is required to explain particle behavior in cases such as when the particle's gyroradius is large compared to the radius of curvature of the magnetic field line. We will refer to changes in µ due to magnetic field line curvature (FLC) as FLC induced µ-scattering or FLC µ-scattering in order to differentiate this from other µ-scattering mechanisms. In this thesis we apply FLC µ-scattering theory to the August 1990 transient proton belt. Transient proton belts form and detrap on the outer fringes of the steady state proton belts. Hudson et al. [1998] gave evidence that transient proton belts were detrapped because of enhanced µ-scattering caused by magnetic storms. We motivate continued investigation of this mechanism using a µ-scattering model due to Birmingham [1984]. However, examination of this and other µ-scattering models reveals a need to improve the present FLC µ-scattering theory. A new empirically derived µ-scattering model is developed which is shown to reduce the error in previous models by a factor of 5 when model results are compared to Lorentz force calculations. Using this model, Fokker-Planck and diffusion equation methods are developed which predict the evolution of charged particle populations due to FLC induced µ-scattering. Particle distributions evolved by these models reduce to one of two classes of eigenfunctions and the eigenfunction decay rates indicate that the transient proton radiation belts and anomalous cosmic ray belts are the most likely populations in the inner magnetosphere to be affected by FLC µ-scattering. Finally, we develop a data driven diffusion model of the August 1990 transient proton belt based on IMP 8 solar wind and D st data. The model results are compared to PROTEL data obtained from the Air Force Research Lab. It is shown that FLC induced µ-scattering is an important loss mechanism in the transient belts, however, it is also shown that improvements to the empirically derived µ-scattering model are required to correctly model the evolution of particle populations trapped near the magnetic equator.
