Abstract	The effects of vacancies on the mechanical properties of FeAl single crystals and polycrystals have been investigated. Scanning calorimetric results indicate that vacancies in quenched Fe-40Al undergo rearrangement at ~550K, and then annihilate at ~750K. The yield stress of single-slip-oriented Fe-40Al single crystal increased linearly (up to 350%) with increasing quenched-in vacancy concentration, up to a vacancy concentration of ~4 x 10[superscript -3). At higher vacancy concentrations a transition to a much slower increase in strength occurred. This transition is not sensitive to the orientation in Fe-40Al single crystals. It is shown that vacancies strengthen FeAl through a frictional hardening mechanism. Vacancies also affect the fracture mechanisms, with vacancies promoting fracture along the slip planes. Dislocation pinning points, debris and loops were produced through the interactions between gliding dislocations and the quenched-in vacancies. Compression tests were also performed on low-temperature-annealed stoichiometric FeAl single crystals and polycrystals as a function of temperature and strain rate. It was shown, for the first time, that stoichiometric FeAl shows a strength anomaly at high strain rates of 1.6 s[superscript -1] and 2 x 10[superscript 3] s[superscript -1] as predicted by the vacancy-hardening model (George and Baker, 1998). In contrast, at the slower strain rate of 1 x 10[superscript -4] s[superscript -1] the yield stress decreased continuously with increasing temperature. The disappearance of slip lines and the lower dislocation densities after deformation at higher temperature indicated the role of dislocation creep. Cold-rolling of Fe-40Al single crystal produced a transition from paramagnetism to ferromagnetism at room temperature. The room temperature ferromagnetism disappeared upon annealing above 440-550K. Analysis of the possible contributions to the ferromagnetic behavior suggests that antiphase boundary (APB) tubes are the main source. An APB tube model is proposed to account for the ferromagnetism.
