Abstract	The primary goal of the current research was to examine the effect of perceived gaze direction on the perception and processing of facially communicated emotion. There is good reason to believe that gaze direction and facial displays of emotion share an underlying signal value of either approach or avoidance. Surprisingly, the combination of these cues in the analysis of social communication has been a virtually neglected area of inquiry. The current research hypothesized that direct gaze would enhance the perception and processing of facially communicated approach-oriented emotions (e.g., anger and joy) whereas averted eye gaze would enhance the perception and processing of facially communicated avoidance-oriented emotions (e.g., fear and sadness). Six studies were conducted to test these hypotheses. Studies 1 and 2 tested the effects of gaze direction on the self-reported perceptual magnitude of emotion displayed on highly recognizable facial expressions. Study 3 tested the effects of gaze direction on emotionally ambiguous facial expressions that conveyed aspects of both anger and fear. Studies 4 and 5 tested the effects of gaze direction on the processing efficiency of emotional expressions using a reaction time paradigm to measure processing speed. Finally, Study 6 tested the effects of gaze direction on the perception of emotional and behavioral dispositions attributed to neutral facial displays (i.e., relaxed facial muscles). All six studies confirmed the central hypothesis guiding the research and support the notion that gaze direction and other facial cues are integrated at a very early stage in the process of forming social perceptions of emotion in others.
