Abstract	The integration of visual and auditory events is thought to require a joint representation of visual and auditory space in a common reference frame. We investigated the coding of visual and auditory space in the lateral and medial intraparietal areas (LIP, MIP) as a candidate for such a representation. We recorded 278 neurons from posterior parietal cortex areas LIP and MIP of two monkeys performing saccades to a row of visual and auditory targets from three different eye positions. The reference frame of both visual and auditory receptive fields ranged along a continuum between eye- and head-centered representations during both the target period and the saccadic period, and was similar to the representation previously found for auditory stimuli in the inferior colliculus and core auditory cortex. The correspondence between visual and auditory receptive fields in individual neurons was weak but sufficient to allow a simple one-layer neural network with weights fit based only on the visual responses of our neurons to 'read-out' auditory target location as well. We interpret these results as suggesting that although the representations of space in areas LIP and MIP are not easily described within the conventional conceptual framework of reference frames, they nevertheless process visual and auditory spatial information in a similar fashion. We also examined the behavioral ramifications of coding auditory spatial information in an intermediate reference frame. Prior theories have suggested that the signals sent to the saccadic motor centers are eye-centered, but our present study and prior evidence from the superior colliculus suggests that this may not be the case for auditory stimuli. If the proper information is not available, then we would expect to see behavioral effects, such as an eye-position effect on the accuracy of saccades to auditory stimuli. We investigated this question, and found that although there is a weak effect of eye position on the accuracy of auditory saccades, it was similar to that found for visual stimuli. Taken together, these studies suggest that the brain codes visual and auditory stimuli along a continuum of reference frame formats, and that this information can be successfully used to execute behaviors.
